Helping Customers Meet Business Needs: The Cornerstone of SmartSense Innovation

Before I started my career as an engineering and product executive in the software industry, I spent several years as a Division Officer in the United States Navy. During my service, I was responsible for the daily operation of the USS Nebraska, a nuclear ballistic missile submarine.

My tour of duty was an amazing experience. I learned not only how to lead people on difficult missions—in this case, 165 sailors—but also how to manage a complex $1.8 billion fully self-contained environment.

Deploying a submarine is a lesson in asset optimization. As soon as you are deep below the surface of the ocean, you can depend only on the people and technology onboard—nothing more, nothing less. When problems arise, you need to leverage what you have and solve the problem!


Engineering products solving real-world business problems

My years in the navy were highly influential on the philosophy of innovation I’ve developed regarding engineering and product management in the IoT industry. In our age of digital transformation, miniaturization, and ever-improving cellular networks, it's tempting to get caught up in the hype of new technologies that may or may not solve problems.

But at SmartSense, the industries and customers we serve have pressing business problems that need answers right now—not sometime in the future. As CTO, my philosophy of technological innovation is guided by our mission to provide reliable and impactful insights and pragmatic solutions for our customers’ real-world challenges, including:

    • Safety of customers and the quality and efficacy of products

Making IoT solutions easy to deploy

One of the challenges that I enjoy is finding the best ways to make the installation and onboarding of our solution as fast and easy as possible for our customers. Unlike a purely Software as a Service (SaaS) company that only delivers applications over the Internet, SmartSense does that and much more, including installing data-collecting sensors and deploying gateways that connect these sensors to the internet and our applications. We don't have the luxury of just giving a customer login access to a cloud-based application that lets them "turn on and go."

NEXT App-Grocery

Our Install App is a great example of a technological innovation that simplifies a complex process. This mobile application can be used by our internal staff, third-party partners, and customers who perform their own installations.

Our R&D team set out to streamline and simplify the complex task of installing condition monitoring hardware and linking it to a customer’s account and assets. Using our Install App, customers can quickly set up and check the status of their assets, gateways, and sensors used to monitor the temperature and humidity in their particular environment.


A great innovation made even better

Just a few weeks ago, we announced the launch of our new B2 Sensor. It's another good example of how we’re always looking to make our current technology even more reliable. Our customers operate in dynamic and high-traffic environments, so they want assurance that their preferred monitoring solution works seamlessly without interrupting internal operations.  

B2 Sensor mounted in a grocery refrigeration caseOur earlier wireless B Sensor was in itself highly successful and packs many features into a small footprint. We wanted to make a new version that was even better. With the more powerful B2, we improved the wireless communication range and made reporting failure proof, all while extending the battery life.

Combined, these innovations ensure long-term stable deployment and enable placement in any make and model of refrigerator or freezer. It’s the perfect balance of features and performance, making the B2 ideally suited for our customers’ operating environments.
